Fifty years ago one of the best lures for northern pike was the double redeye spoon. The redeye, the red and white Dardevle and the Pikie Minnow were all fishermen used in the days when you had to wind the starting rope around the outboard's flywheel by hand.
Then the redeye just seemed to fade from the scene. Did anglers just want to use something else? Or did fish get wise to it?
Whatever the reason, for the next half-century, almost nobody at Bow Narrows Camp on Red Lake would have claimed that the redeye was one of their best lures -- until last fall. During a very cold spell the first week of September, one of our anglers using a redeye caught more 40-plus inch northern pike than the rest of the camp combined.
He cast it in the deep weedbeds, a proven technique for this time of year. The redeye was obviously what the fish wanted. Welcome back Mr. Redeye!
